Expectant mothers are set to be among the first beneficiaries of the Universal Health Care program. The initial phase of the program will roll out on June 1st and will feature pre-natal and post-natal care for infants free of charge. This includes free laboratory and Ultra Sound services for mothers at 17 primary healthcare facilities across the island.

The programme is backed by an allocation granted to the Ministry of Health in the 2023/2024 budget. Earlier this week, the PM congratulated the Ministry of Health for spearheading and implementing the project.

“If you know, you know that in St. Lucia our birth rate is beginning to decline” Pierre said. “We [are] starting the universal health care program at the child level, at the maternal care. So, we can have mothers being able to get all the necessary tests, all the necessary examinations, so that they can have healthy babies and we can start from there” he noted.
