Lenard “Spider” Montoute, PRO for the United Workers Party, has called out the St. Lucia Labour Party for their seemingly callous approach to fighting crime and violence on island. At press conference, held on Thursday July 7th, Montoute pleaded with the government to pay closer attention to issues relating to crime on island. This comes in the light of the death of five people within 72 hours this past weekend.
This is not the first the time the Opposition PRO is raising his voice about this concern. Previously, the former Gros Islet MP had called for the sacking of the Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs.
Montoute reiterated calls for the Prime Minister to act now to alleviate this situation before all is lost. Additionally, he reminded the government that the economic stability of the state is negatively affected when crime is perpetrated.
“Our economy is in jeopardy. I want to remind St. Lucians and the government of St. Lucia once again that we are tourist-based economy… Not only locals have fallen to the violence of the criminal elements but we also have foreigners, who come from some of the countries we depend on for our tourism, have lost their lives”
