St. Lucians everywhere were locked in to their television sets, to witness sprinter queen Julien Alfred, finish 4th in the Women’s 200m Finals at the World Championships in Budapest on Thursday. The athlete finished with a time of 22.04 seconds, capping off her stint at the games. Alfred received immense local support at a watch party in the Derek Walcott Square. Spectators from all over the island came in their national colours to cheer on the St. Lucia’s golden girl.
The race was an exhilarating one from the offset. In a league of her own, Jamacian Shericka Jackson improved her own championship record and took gold with a time of 21.41. Coming in four tenths behind, USA’s Gabrielle Thomas who secured the silver medal, while Sha’Carri Richardson added another medal to her collection, achieving a personal best of 21.92.
Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Kenson Casmir, added his voice in commendation for Alfred’s remarkable performance at the championships.

“Congratulations goes out to Julien Alfred. Her 4th place finish in the 200m is St Lucia’s best result at a global track event. We will continue to push towards getting this global medal. We are well on our way! We are beyond proud!” Casimir said.
The athlete will hope to be buoyed by this performance as she now locks focus on next year’s Olympics in Paris.
