Children of incarcerated prisoners at the Bordelis Correctional Facility, will be reunited with their parents when the institution hosts “Inmate Family Day” on August 6th. The initiative had been a well-established event at the BCF, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and according to prison officials, an air of excitement has been registered for its imminent return.
The program is part of a larger effort to rehabilitate and reintegrate the inmates, into the society. According to Clinical Social Worker Melissa Dupres- Roserie, such activities are of critical importance, as the children need to establish emotional bonds, essential for their growth. She also noted that the inmates stand to also benefit from the initiative, as behavioral patterns are known to improve when prisoners have familial contact.
“It is clear that imprisonment disrupts positive, nurturing relationships and attachments between parents and children” Dupres-Roserie said. “We also understand the importance of families to inmates in preventing recidivism and delinquency and so on this day we will engage the children of incarcerated parents, have them spend a day with their parents, with fun, games and team building exercises.”
It is the hope of event organizers, that this year’s family day will be appreciated by all participants.
