Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, has commended the National Insurance Corporation’s (NIC) National Sneaker Day program. This year, the program was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s St. Lucia Moves Campaign. The partnership encouraged overwhelming support amongst locals, in spite of the unfavorable weather.
The CMO noted that such a program, is a timely one, as St. Lucia continues its fight against the plague that is non-communicable diseases. She added that these diseases place a serious burden on the state and need to mitigated through healthy practices.
“The good news is there is something we can do about it, to ensure our future generations are not as affected by stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and other complications of hypertension and diabetes are we are today” she said. “Physical activity has been established as one of the most effective health protective habits to achieve and improve state of wellness” Dr. George added.
Locals are encouraged by both the NIC and Ministry of Health, to not merely see fitness as a fad, but rather recognize it as vital part of their everyday lives.
