Former St. Lucian-cricketer Daren Sammy has been appointed new head coach of the West Indies Men’s T20 and ODI teams. Sammy, who led the Windies to two T20 world cup trophies as captain, has expressed enthusiasm as he prepares to finetune the strategy leading the franchise team.
According to reports by CWI President, Kishore Shallow, Sammy beat out some 20 other applicants for the role. The Micoud native comes into the job with previous coaching experience in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Pakistani Premier League. Sammy’s leadership skills, both as a captain and coach, were central to St Lucia Kings’ recent success in the CPL and help validate his appointment. The move comes in the aftermath of recent disappointing showings by the Men in Maroon at the last two ICC tournaments.

“It will be a challenge but one that I’m ready for and excited about,” Sammy said in a CWI statement. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity, especially looking at the players we have and the impact that I believe I can have in the dressing room” he added.
Sammy’s first hurdle will be to get his troops past the UAE in Sharjah this coming June. The series will form part of the team’s preparations for participation in World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe later that month.

Meanwhile, Sammy has received a glowing commendation from the island’s Prime Minister following news of his appointment. A congratulatory message from the Office of the Prime Minister noted that “Saint Lucia stands proudly behind (Daren Sammy) in his new role as Head Coach of the West Indies men’s squad.”
