Today, Thursday June 1, 2023 marks the dawning of a new era in St. Lucia’s health care system. At an event at Constitution Park in Castries, the government officially launched the inital phase of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Program. This part of the initiative will see expectant mothers gain free access to maternity laboratory and ultrasound services at clinics across the island.
According to Director of Universal Health Coverage, Dr. Alicia Eugene-Ford, it is the hope of organizers that pregnant mothers will take advantage of the new services offered. “We realized over the year, while mothers may be coming to the wellness center, they have difficulty paying for the routine lab tests that are done through the pregnancy and also the ultrasound” Ford said. “With this change we anticipate that we will get more mothers coming to the wellness center, because we have improved the training and some of the techniques on ground, clinical training etc. and additionally we have this laboratory and ultrasound services being offered through the wellness centers” she added.
Expectant mothers are encouraged to contact their nearest wellness center as soon as possible and schedule their appointments.
