The St. Lucia Fire Service has offered official condolences to the first responders and families of the victims of Sunday’s fire at a dormitory in Guyana. According to reports, a female student, who was upset at disciplinary action taken against her, set the building ablaze, killing 19 of her colleagues in the process. Fire officials fought against the inferno for over three hours.
In a statement, St. Lucian Fire Officials expressed empathy towards their Guyanese colleagues, stating that an incident of such a magnitude can be emotionally draining for anybody.
“We salute the men and women of the Guyana Fire Service, who placed their lives on the line, while they bravely responded to and performed their duties during incident”, Communications Officer for the Fire Service, Stacy Joseph stated. “We stand with the Chief Fire Officer, in this tragedy and we will continue lending our support through the Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs in any way possible” she added.
Guyana’s President Mohamed Ifran Ali has declared three days of national mourning in response to the deadly fire as his nation recovers from the tragedy.
