The Saint Lucia Kings have secured their spot in the playoffs of CPL 2023 with a dominant performance against the Guyana Amazon Warriors last Thursday. The Warriors entered the game on a high note, having secured their place in the post-season against the Jamaica Tallawahs the night before. As the only undefeated team in the tournament up to this point, the Boys in Blue knew they had to be at their very best to overcome the juggernaut squad.
When put in to bowl first, the Kings applied serious pressure on the Warriors in the initial overs, restricting the run rate during the powerplay. However, the Warriors didn’t give up easily. A quick-fire 40 from Azam Khan added impetus to their run rate. Finishers Keemo Paul and Shimron Hetmyer contributed 19 runs each, propelling the team to a competitive total of 170/3.
In the second phase of the match, the early loss of Johnson Charles for only 1 run had fans nervously on edge. It was up to the squad’s middle order to strengthen the innings and guide the team to victory. Newcomer Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who was dropped on 38, played a sensational, match-winning innings of 86, providing the backbone for the batting effort. Colin Munro from New Zealand chipped in with a solid 55, bringing the Kings closer to the required total. After Munro and Rajapaksa were dismissed, Captain Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams took charge, leading the team to a 7-wicket victory.
The team will utilize their final group stage game of the season, to prepare for a must-win eliminator game on September 19th. The Boys in Blue will aim to showcase their best cricket and finally bring a title to Saint Lucia.
